Indoor Putting Green Design

So, you know you want a putting green for your home, golf team, putting studio or office. But, our standard models don’t quite fit your space perfectly.

Well, we want your green to be perfect so, we’re here to help you get what you want. We put a lot of thought into our standard models, they’re designed to be short game practice machines. We’ve listened to our customers through the years and in many cases the standard models work well.

But, you may not know that over 60% of the greens we ship have some level of customization.

  • Want to add or remove a hole? No problem.
  • Want to add 2′ to the length or width? No problem.
  • Want to add a fringe border? No Problem.
  • Need a custom L Shape size? No Problem.
  • Want a corner green that fits your space perfectly? No Problem.
  • How about an inlay chipping area? No Problem.
  • Need help designing your indoor facility? We do that too!

We design indoor putting greens for clients each and every day. Customization is no problem at Pro Putt Systems because we stock all panels, components, putting turf and various types of chipping and hitting turf in our shop and our guys can build anything you like.

This gives us the unique flexibility to create “cut to order putting greens”.

Let’s go over the basics…

What Are Your Greens Made From?

A couple common questions in regard to custom greens revolve around materials…

Do you use your best turf an all putting greens? Yes, from turf only to wall to wall golf rooms we only use TourPutt Ultimate. TPU has a 21 year history, it is made from dual color “Miraset” nylon, it is warrantied for 10 years (that’s an outdoor warranty), and it does not require any infill. The Miraset process is our secret sauce and it is proprietary to TPU. The end result of our manufacturing process is a turf that is incredibly tight and dense. TPU has structure and durability, which creates putting and chipping performance unlike any other turf.

TPU rolls in the range of 10.8 to 11.6 on a USGA Stimp Meter, when it is on the interlocking base panel system, or a hard flat surface.

TourPutt Stimp Rating

What are these panels all about? Good question. Interlocking Base Panel Technology is one of the greatest inventions in the history of indoor golf.

First and foremost; these panels are not made from foam or foam rubber. The foam panels you may see elsewhere are knock-offs, they’re cheap and dysfunctional. Don’t get me started.

Here is a base panel graphic to review:

Base Panel System

As you can see in the detail, a standard panel covers an area of roughly 2′ x 2′, it is 2″ thick, you can literally drive a car on them, and they come in a few varying geometric shapes. The 5 size/shapes you see above are the 5 panels that we use to make all of our greens with base.

Base Panel Underside

I’m not a polymeric engineer but I can tell you that they are made from some durable stuff (they weigh 8lbs each).

Most importantly, while they are durable, somehow, they are also able to flex in order to add nice smooth, rolling undulations and breaks….and when you want the base system dead flat again, take the undulation material away, they snap back to dead flat.

Interlocking Base Panels

The base panels are 2″ thick, TPU putting turf is .5″ thick thus, you get a 2.5″ drop into the cups. Watching and hearing the ball disappear into a cup is a vitally important aspect of effective putting practice.

Do I need the panels or can I go with turf only? Another great question. The answer is no, the panels aren’t completely necessary but, the way the panels and the turf work together creates an optimal practice surface.

With that said there are many circumstances where our customers opt for a turf only option, either in bulk, in one of our pre-cut sizes or a custom cut size.

The panels serve three primary purposes

1) They elevate the turf off the ground, so the ball drops into a cup and you don’t have to core drill holes in your floor.

2) They allow for the addition and subtraction of smooth rolling undulations. You simply place an Easy Breaks and Undulation Kit underneath the assembled base panel system and you have just about any shaped putt you want, even uphill and downhill.

3) This is very important to many of our customers. The panels and the turf work together to absorb and disperse energy from a golf ball being chipped to the surface. This relationship creates a very realistic “check and run” on all those little short game shots you’ll encounter on the course.

Plus when you are using a simulator, there are more benefits:

4) We can inset a high quality mat directly in the floor for that very clean and professional look. We call this custom simulator flooring.

5) When using a floor mounted launch monitor, we can channel the interface and power wires beneath the turf, inside panel system and have them pop up where you want them, as opposed to having wires run across the floor.

Now that you have a basic understanding of the materials involved, let’s discuss the types of custom greens we build here at Pro Putt Systems.

Varying Levels of Custom

Let’s give you the low down on the lingo we use around here, that way when we talk, we’re speaking the same language.

Custom with Bump Rail

You’ll notice that all of our standard models have a bump rail border. This bump rail is molded right in that particular type of panel. You can stand on it and kick it, the bump rail won’t budge. We can create inside corners, bump out corners and rectangle or square greens with rounded corners.

Custom greens with bump rail edge is the most popular type of custom we build.

Custom Green Design

* The reason we love custom greens with bump rails around the outer edge is because they’re easy for you to install, they’re very cost effective and most importantly, the overall square footage is ALL PUTTING SURFACE. Let me explain…

Both of these greens shown below are 8′ x 12′ in footprint, they both have 5 cup positions, however note the actual size of the putting surface:

Indoor Green Design Process

Longest Putt: The green with the fringe border has a putting surface which is only 6′ x 10′ in reality. The longest effective diagonal putt for the green with the fringe border is about 9′ while the effective diagonal longest putt of the green with the bump rail is nearly 12′.

Useable Square Footage: The useable square footage of the green with the fringe border is only 60 ft2, while the useable square footage of the green with bump rail is 96 ft2.

Price Comparison: The fringed green is going to price out around $2,645 shipped, while the green with the bump rail will price out around $$3,000 shipped. The fringed green will price out approx. 20-30% higher while it offers 30% less putting surface square footage.

I’m not trying to discourage you from going with a green with fringe, we sell numerous fringed greens each week. Many people want what they want and that is that, we’re fine with this.

Custom with Fringe

Custom greens with a fringe border have a ton of aesthetic appeal. But here is what I’d like to explain, the fringe border is largely there to obscure the transition and add some cool, natural shape, NOT NECESSARILY THERE TO CHIP FROM.

You can chip from the fringe border, but it is slanted to cover the transition. We offer a few different chipping mats and pads for chipping which all have multiple chipping surfaces and they’re portable (ie. you’re not stuck chipping from the same distance all the time).

indoor chipping greens

Custom greens with fringe borders come in a couple different formats:

1) Free Standing in a room – a green that has a transition from the level of the putting surface down to the floor around the entire circumference of the putting green and…the green shown below this type of custom.

Indoor Green w Fringe Border

2) Here’s an example of a hybrid fringe border and bump rail. In this case, the customer liked the fringe look on the side where he could see it from the other rooms in his home. But, he didn’t want to spend unnecessary money fringing the other sides that he could not see regularly.

Fringe and Bump Rail Hybrid

3) Corner greens – a green that goes flush on 2 or even 3 sides in a corner. This type of green will usually have a transition border only on the exposed sides of the putting green, against the walls, it is flush with either putting turf right up to the wall or putting turf then fringe turf up against the walls.

Corner Custom Green

While we travelled to install the two greens shown above, it is not at all necessary to pay us for installation. The green below was designed in our office, cut in our shop, then shipped to Chicago where the customer installed himself. (and he is about as handy as me…not very)

Design and Ship Greens

Custom Wall to Wall

Custom installed golf rooms are very popular in luxury homes, college facilities and high end clubs. They pack a visual punch unlike any other green. When they’re designed properly, they are just as functional as they are beautiful.

In almost all cases, one of our crews is going to travel to install a wall to wall golf room.

Here are a few examples of wall to wall for review.

This is a wall to wall green complete with undulation, inlay tight lie chipping areas, fringe border on one side for rough chipping and 7 cups.

7 Putting Drills – Speed Control and Short Putt Consistency

Putting Drills, they sound so boring, so mundane, that most people don’t do them to improve their putting stroke. Well, the fact is, if you’re not doing putting drills, you are costing yourself shots.

Everybody knows that golf is more enjoyable when you play better and score better. People that are serious about their golf game are always trying to break some scoring mark or move their handicap index to a lower number, maybe you just want to beat a long time nemesis (aka golf buddy).

Putting drills are the quickest way to minimize those annoying misses and most importantly; putting drills will help you hit par putts that you’re currently missing. There is nothing more annoying than a 3-putt after hitting a decent drive, then hitting a solid iron shot to 18 feet, rolling the birdie putt up 4′ short and missing the par putt.

That 3-putt scenario is the result of two easily fixable putting issues, speed control and short putt consistency.

In handicapped events; if you’re a higher handicapper, say 12 or 16 and you are having a hard time beating lower handicappers in the 3 to 7 range, it is a virtual certainty that 3-putts are the issue. In match play events at your club, which are incredibly common, the handicap system levels the field like no other format. No other format gives the higher index player a better shot at beating a good player. The 12 HC or higher player will beat the better player, when and only when they minimize 3 putts.

Speed Control Putting Drills

1) Multi Station Drill with Single Target and Max Distance Line

Distance Control Putting Drill

The essence of this putting drill is that you are moving from station to station in an alternating fashion in order to establish a new set up on each shot. A new set-up requires a new pre-shot routine for each putt and pre-shot routine is incredibly important, especially when pressure is turned up.

As you move between stations, you will align to the target and make a putt where the distance is just as important as the alignment. You’ll note there is a line behind the target spot which your ball should not drift past. Each putt should roll past the target, but not past the line behind the target.

2) Single Station Quadrant Putting Drill

Putting Drill - Quadrant

This putting drill could be the most important game of Tic-Tac-Toe you’ve ever played. Using the tee claws, create a quadrant (if you only have two tee claws) or get advanced with your distance control and set up the 9 spaces.

Simply choose a square and roll a putt that comes to rest inside the square you’ve chosen.

Set a goal and see if you can get 6 of 9 inside the chosen square, once you make your goal, try for 7, then 8 and ultimately 9 of 9.

In order to simulate pressure, be sure to commit to the “Every Shot Counts” philosophy. Never give yourself a break because your cell phone rang or your mind wandered off for a moment.

If you do wander off, force yourself to start over.

Short Putt Consistency Drills

There is nothing more demoralizing than missing a short par putt and if you think missing a par putt is tough on the psyche, how about missing a 3 foot birdie putt.

The fact is that matches are won or lost and rounds are saved or killed inside 6 feet. A solid putt that is mis-read is one thing but, open faced, sliced putts that scurry by the hole without a sniff, are inexcusable.

Drills build muscle memory and motor skills, they give you a certain level of success conditioning. Sinking short putt after short putt on your practice green will help you build positive thoughts you can draw on when standing over a knee-knocker.

3) Two Line Putter Head Gate

Putting Drill - 2 line gate

This drill can be used to hone the path the putter head will take as it travels back and through on short putts.

This drill has a 3 fold effect:

  1. Guide for putter head take away
  2. Guide for putter head at impact
  3. Guide for putter head on follow through

4) Three Tee Y-Gate

Putting drill - y gate

This drill helps players in three aspects of short putt consistency:

  1. It gives the ball a clearly defined path, down the line, where it must travel
  2. It helps keep the take away short and compact which reduces room for error
  3. It also helps the putter head stay low on take away and follow through

As you can see in the graphic, you don’t need a cup to putt into (although a cup is optimal). You can use the Tee Claw and Lanyard to create the Y-Gate and another Turf Screw as a target. This will work on high quality turf, or on your carpet.

5) Putter Head Gate

Putting Drill - Putter Gate

While the last couple drills are geared towards getting the ball rolling straight off the putter head, this drill is geared toward avoiding the mis-hit.

Mis-hits, or, not hitting the ball in the sweet spot of the putter head, will cause a myriad of issues with putts of all lengths.

Mis-hits:

  • cause the ball to leave the face in the wrong direction
  • cause the ball to leave at the wrong speed
  • cause the ball to actually leave the face of the putter with side spin

Any of these issues will cause you to miss short putts, I’ve actually seen all three of these issues on a single putt!

6) String Line Putting Drill

Putting Drill String Line

While many will view this drill as an alignment drill, which it is, I like to consider another important aspect of this putting drill; small target = small miss.

Marksman are trained to factor all data points available and all pertinent conditions, but they are also trained that a miss of a couple inches over 2,500 feet is the difference between success and failure.

Thankfully we are playing golf and success or failure is hardly on the line but, a similar principle can apply. What is on the “line” is the exact point where you want the ball travel over the lip of the cup and into the hole.

If the putt is straight, it should go in center cut. If the putt has some break, it should go in through the actual front door of the putt. Point is if you choose a very small target and not just the entire cup, your aim will be precise and your misses will be fewer.

Another key to this drill is eye position. As you can see the string line is directly over the ball at address, this is a great way to be sure your eyes are positioned directly over the center of the ball at address, an important aspect of alignment and squarely hit putts.

7) Ball Gate Putting Drill

Putting Drill - Ball Gate

The unfortunate fact is, not all short putts are straight. Yes, some will break left or right. However, just because a putt is breaking doesn’t mean you have to help it break…

Far too often I see poor putters cut across the ball in some sort of subconscious attempt at helping the ball break to the hole. It’s obviously a nervous reaction to a touchy putt but, its a killer.

The ball gate drill will help you stay honest on those shorter putts that do have some break. If you push it or pull it off the putter blade, the ball will not travel through the gate. Breaking putts must start on the correct line in order to naturally use the slope to break toward the hole…and enter in the actual front door of the cup.

……

What is a Tee Claw?

A Tee Claw is a simple little device that screws into the fibers of the putting turf and can hold a tee. All of these drills and more can be set up using these devices.

Which True Strike Do I Need?

The most common questions we get in regard to True Strike is: Which True Strike Mat do I need?

In case you’re not familiar with True Strike Golf Mats, lets first give you  a quick rundown on what a True Strike mat is and how it differs from other golf mats.

The secret is a gel bag integrated into the hitting area where you’d hit all of your iron shots from. You never see it because it is built into the mat and underneath a very tough, woven strike surface. Most turf is “tufted” but this strike surface is “woven” so it won’t stretch over thousands of shots.

The strike surface looks like a regular stance mat like you’d see at the driving range but, it has a structured foam material inside the bag which is then permeated with silicone gel. The woven turf, works in conjunction with the gel/foam and creates a very realistic energy dispersion when struck at high speeds with the force of an iron.

True Strike Hitting Mats

This strike surface is specially engineered to withstand 150,000 strikes or more with an iron moving at a speed of 92 mph. You can drive a nail into the gel bag and it won’t leak, its an engineering marvel.

This is not a gimmick, this is 9 years of engineering and trial & error which included 4 complete redesigns and 7 overall changes to get perfect, this is why the final version is called the MK7.

There are two very important reasons why the density of the Strike Surface is important to understand.

The density of the Strike Surface is designed to replicate the actual physical density of a real fairway.

Reason 1) Good Contact – Ball Hit First

On good contact with an iron from a True Strike Mat, the ball will be struck first, in a downward motion. This downward strike is what causes spin because the ball will pinch between the clubface and the turf below, subsequently traveling out and up.

On ALL OTHER GOLF MATS this spin rate is inaccurate because the turf below is either too soft or too hard. Either extreme and the spin rate is lower. A lower spin rate causes a ball to “jump” and carry a longer distance because it never “tops out”. Spin is what makes a well struck iron shot to carry the correct distances.

Here is a graphic which demonstrates a shot that “jumps”.

Golf Mat Graphic

When a shot is hit pure on a True Strike not only does it sound like a well struck shot, it acts like one. It carries a realistic distance (not long like a jumper) with the correct spin and readings on a Trackman. Spin and Launch angle test within 3% of a natural fairway on a True Strike. Traditional mats don’t test within 12%.

Reason 2) Bad Contact – Ground Hit First

Again, all other golf mats carry the characteristic of too hard or too soft. On a normal range mat, like you’ll see at a range sitting on top of concrete, the club head is “re-positioned” upward when a fat shot is struck. This re-positioning upward causes you to hit what you think is a good shot. The fat swing hits the hard mat first and is pushed up during that millisecond prior to contact. Not only does this cause you to think you hit a good clean shot, but also causes a nagging injury called “golfer’s elbow”. An ailment which can and will last for years. The energy dispersion pushes the club head up and through the shaft, up into your arms.

On mats that are too soft, the club head is allowed to move freely under the ball and even though you’re catching it a groove or two high on the face, it will still fly out at speed, with a lower spin rate, because it hasn’t hit the sweet spot on the club face.

Conversely, when you catch the True Strike Surface a bit fat, say a groove or two high, you’ve hit the mat first which will cause the club head to slow down and you’ll hit the fat shot like you’re used to on the course. A real fat shot causes the face angle to change, as it makes contact with the ground, resulting in the high flame outs or the low going shot. This is actual feedback on a fat shot and other golf mats cannot provide this level of feedback.

Better Engineering = Better, Safer Practice

The True Strike System is completely modular, let me explain the various parts, what they are and how they work together to create the best golf mat hitting system available today.

Please take a moment to review this graphic of a True Strike Single Model:

Modular Golf MatAs you’ll see, four modular parts make up the entire Single Model system and when combined weigh 112 lbs. The parts that make up a single model are described below.

  1. The Gel Section (1 piece)
  2. The Range Mat Section (3 pieces)
  3. Edge Trim (1 piece)
  4. Ball Tray (1 piece)

Each True Strike will come to you with a Tee Receiver and 50 Tees (25 long and 25 short) that fit in the receiver and won’t fly out when hit. These components are packaged inside the packaging of every gel section.

True Strike Tee System

Now that you have the basics, lets discuss the 5 different standard models.

True Strike All SystemsHere are the 5 models listed in order of popularity:

  1. Single Model
  2. Academy Model
  3. Custom Simulator Flooring (bottom of page)
  4. Impact Model
  5. Portable Model
  6. Double Model

Single Model True Strike

The single is by far the most popular as it features all of the True Strike functionality but also has a ball tray. It is most popular in home settings where a player is hitting into a net and you rarely have to switch from right handed to left handed.

Single Model

While the modular pieces can be easily taken apart and switched, it is not optimal for right handed players and left simultaneously, the second most popular, the Academy Model is best for left and right handed without moving parts around.

Shop True Strike Single

True Strike for Driving Ranges

The True Strike Single Model is also the most popular choice for ranges where you are purchasing multiple units as you can orient most of the units for right handed players and a few for left handed players.

The single also has that ball tray which is popular in driving range settings.

The real value for a driving range setting is this. Inevitably a range mat is going to wear out. It is simply impossible for a range mat to last forever given the amount of beating and the weather it is exposed to.

But, when a True Strike does wear, it will only really wear in the Gel Section, and because a True Strike is completely modular you will then only have to replace the gel section and not the entire mat. This is where the real value for a driving range comes into play.

If your driving range sells a large bucket of 55 balls for $8.00 this comes out to 0.145 cents per ball. Let’s assume that 30% of those shots are hit off the tee. At 150,000 strikes this range mat has an economic life which delivers $31,116 worth of hitting. Many range players come for entertainment and they hit 80% drivers and none of these driver shots are included in the 150,000 strikes.

Even more important to the calculation is the return traffic you’ll receive because the players that do care about their game feel the difference in a True Strike mat on their first shot with an iron. They will come back again and again because they’ll notice that the mat is more realistic, offers better practice and the mat DID NOT CAUSE THEIR JOINTS TO HURT.

Academy Model True Strike

The Academy model is the most popular for Custom Club Fitters and Indoor Teaching Facilities. Or outdoor teaching facilities where you only have 1 or 2 stalls set up for teaching.

Academy Model

The Academy model does not come with a ball tray as a standard option but, being completely modular, ball trays can be added at anytime.

Shop True Strike Academy

The most popular buyer of a True Strike Academy is a college golf program. It offers left and right handed players on the same mat without the need to change the layout.

For Launch Monitors like Trackman, Foresight GC2, FlightScope or SkyTrack, the Academy is most popular because you have the ability to place the unit right on the mat, in the case of a GC2 or SkyTrack, which are “side reading” devices. (side reading means they read the first 8-10 inches of ball flight perpendicular to the ball flight from ground level)

In the case of a Trackman or a FlightScope launch monitor, these are rear reading devices, they are set behind the ball address position a number of feet and read the ball from behind. Because they are rear reading, they read a very slender sliver of ball flight, lets call it the “read line”.  Each range mat section has two plugs in it for the tee receiver. Thus the range mat section can be simply picked up and rotated in order to put both drives and iron shots inside the read line of a Trackman or FlightScope. This takes less than 10 seconds and does not require you lift the frame of the True Strike.

If you’re going to spend the money on a device as awesome as a Trackman or a FlightScope, it only makes sense to be hitting off the right mat. Why spend the money on the most realistic technology, and not spend the money on the most realistic hitting surface?

Impact Model

The Impact Model is specifically designed to hit irons only, but you can and many people do, hit driver and tee shots from an Impact Model True Strike.

Impact Golf Mat

If budget is a concern or you only plan to hit minimal drivers, you can easily take that center panel and place it on the other side of the Strike Surface, you can then hit drivers or any other type of tee ball.

Shop True Strike Impact

Many people are hitting indoor and they only have 9′ of clearance thus, they only hit iron shots, the Impact Model is a perfect solution for them. Remember, you can add the other modular pieces later, if circumstances change.

For driving ranges where the max distance is 200 yards and the range is an “Iron Only” range, like many older private clubs, the Impact is a great answer.

 Portable Model

The Portable is a good option if you plan on inlaying your strike surface in base panels or flooring, or if you have an alternative surface to stand on while you hit, but want the realism of a True Strike.

Portable MatThe portable is elevated 2.25 inches so if you do not plan to inlay it or have another surface to stand on, you’ll have an awkward stance.

Double Model

The Double Model is a luxury version of the Academy, it is very spacious and offers left hand hitting as well as right hand hitting with a ball tray on each side.

Luxury Golf MatPerfect for high end residential simulator set ups or high end fitting studios. This is a popular version for the teaching area of a private golf club. Plenty of room and can facilitate a launch monitor right on the surface or plenty of room for the read line on rear reading simulator devices.

College Indoor Golf Facilities – Now a Necessity

As I write this it’s 29 degrees outside and needless to say, there won’t be any golf played in the Northern US today. Or will there?

If you’re a student-athlete at a school where the Athletic Director has had the foresight to build an indoor practice facility, there sure will be golf played today, or practiced at the very least.

Golf Rooms: The Ultimate Golf Cave

Ten years ago the idea of a golf room in your home was almost unthinkable. The expense and aggravation of creating a platform for placing putting turf on was a bit much for the average golf addict.

Besides you can just go to the range or stay late at your club on the putting green….but you rarely did and your short game continued to lag.

We all know how important putting is to the overall score that goes on the card. We all know how important those little shots around the green are. But yet, even serious players still don’t practice putting and chipping as much as they should.

No More Excuses!

You don’t need to buy green carpet from the carpet store and you don’t need to lug a load of lumber in to build out a platform that will allow you to actually see the ball drop into a cup.

Nope, those days are over and the modern golf addict has discovered that they can build a golf sanctuary in their basement or bonus room for a great price. Those junkies are customers of Pro Putt Systems.

Now this is a Man Cave!

How Important Is Putting

We hope, desperately hope, that we don’t REALLY need to discuss the importance of putting, relevant to scoring in golf. But you know us, we’re going to anyway!

I’ve heard it said:

“Half of golf is fun; the other half is putting”

Says who!

I was watching the Australian Open last night when Adam Scott made one of the rarest shots in golf on a par 5, the Double Eagle, aka the Albatross, aka freakin’ nice shot, Mate! Or whatever our friends down under say.

Given the rare nature of the shot, they showed him walk all the way up to the green, waving to the crowd, and pull the ball out of the cup. The thing about it was, he walked on to the green conspicuously empty handed.

When Was the Last Time You Didn’t Putt?

I’ve been golfing for nearly 20 years and I can count on one hand the number of times I had the fashionable luxury of walking onto a green empty handed.

The point is, it doesn’t happen very often.

Yes, you have a putter in your hands on every single hole. When you’re starting out, you even sometimes have the unfortunate occasion to have the putter in your hands more than once, with a wedge in between, ouch!

People love the long drive, everyone is searching for length, when in reality they should be searching for a better putting stroke.

Can you think of a single occasion where the winner of a PGA Tour event, led the field in driving distance? Probably not.

Conversely, the leader in putting average consistently wins tournaments at all levels fromJunior Golf all the way up to the PGA Tour.

The PGA Tour was not satisfied with the regular putting stats it had been keeping for so many years and they added a new putting stat this year called, “Strokes Gained Putting”.

Putt For Dough

Take a look at the leader in the new putting stat this year, Luke Donald. Sir Luke, or soon to be Knighted Sir Luke, earned over $12,000,000 globally this year, between the two tours US and Euro.

During his amazing 2011 run to Double Money Titles, Luke went a stretch of 449 holes without a single 3-putt. WOW, that’s nearly 25 rounds of golf without 3 putting.

Eliminate the 3 Putts

The difference between a Tour Player and everyone else is amazing consistency on and around, the putting greens.

Imagine for a moment, you eliminate 3 putts or at least minimize 3 putts.

Do yourself a favor and go back to your last round and subtract one stroke from each green you 3 putted.

The average weekend golfer supposedly shoots around 96 on average. In reality if the average player truly played by R&A Rules I would bet the average score would be more like 102-105.

The average weekend golfer 3 putts 6 times during a round of 18 holes. The average tour player 3 putts .02% of the time. The leader in 3 putts for the 2011 season was DJ Trahan, who 3 whacked a total of 6 times.

So, a Tour Player, the worst 3 putter on Tour, 3 putted the same amount of times in anentire year as the average weekend guy 3 putts during a single round.

What Would You Do To Break __ ?

I don’t know where you are but, every golfer has a magical number they’re trying to break.

Eliminating 3 putts would get almost every golfer below that number, even minimizing the 3 putts would get most golfers under their magic number.

Golf is a game that is meant to be enjoyed, never breaking your number becomes un-enjoyable over time. There’s nothing more satisfying than going low, or at least low by your own standards.

A Pro Putt Systems Green Can Make Your Life More Enjoyable

I have to laugh, it’s a bit of a bold claim, but, on top of being a very enviable amenity at your home, one of our putting greens will, significantly improve your short game.

That I can say with certainty.

Better Putting Requires Practice

Pre-shot routine, back stroke, hands quiet, consistent speed, follow through, there is a lot to remember when standing over a shaky birdie putt.

But, nothing can substitute for confidence, confidence is the key and confidence comes with experience. Short term confidence can be gained by simply getting “hot”.

The problem with just getting hot is, it’s short term.

Consistency is the key to confidence and there is simply no way to build consistency without meaningful practice.

Needless to say, that’s where we come in.

Putting at night, putting during the winter months, chipping every now and then when you don’t have 2 hours to go out the the practice range.

Imagine being able to just spend 10 minutes per day on putting drills, IN YOUR HOME!

Oh yes, we can help you with that.

Take a look around the site, peek at our putting greens, maybe you should consider acustom putting green, tailored to your exact needs.

Whatever remedy you choose, please choose one, so you can eliminate those nasty 3 putts! This way the whole game of golf will be fun, at least for you!

“When you lip out several putts in a row, you should never think that means that you’re putting well. When you’re putting well, the only question is what part of the hole it’s going to fall in, not if it’s going in.” –Jack Nicklaus

Putt Like Jack

Anchored Putting Rule

It appears as though the anchored putting debate has finally been put to bed (or has it). The USGA and R and A announced a joint effort to ban a putting stroke which utilizes anchoring against the body, above the forearm.

The ban, or proposed rule change 14-1b, as it’s being called, is currently in a 90 day waiting period in order to listen to the golfing community and to be sure that valid arguments don’t exist which they hadn’t considered.

At Pro Putt Systems, frankly we love the proposed ban (from a business standpoint) as it will cause serious golfers to explore new techniques for consistent putting that avoids anchoring. Particularly new ways of perfecting the putting stroke from within 8 feet. This creates an improved business environment for us and…we like this.

However, I believe that there are some notes that are worth mentioning surrounding the rule change. I’m not even sure why, but for some reason, I’m incredibly ticked off about this ruling.

R and A Picture Gallery of What The Golf Gods Say is Right and Wrong

USGA and R and A Negotiation Table

While the R and A is almost as powerful in Scotland as the Supreme Court here in the US, they run very low risk of getting any “guff” from players and equipment companies who oppose the rule change. By guff, I mean legal action.

They admitted that they discussed the “process” with legal counsel in order to make sure they got the rule change correct and they even brought up the fact that they are governed by Scottish rule during the press conference.

The USGA on the other hand is not so lucky and there is a potential litigation issue in the United States from Tour Players, Equipment manufacturers and even disabled amateurs.

When the USGA altered the rules surrounding square grooves PING made quite a fuss and cost the governing bodies some serious dough in the legal system. PING wasn’t the only one but they were the most expensive.

In the most glaring cop-out in rules history, there is little doubt that the USGA had a list of demands at the negotiation table. My opinion is that front and center of this list was the request that the change not be an Equipment Ruling but a Stroke Definition Ruling.

That’s an important distinction. A ban on long putters, i.e. putters in excess of 35” in length certainly would have raised quite the outcry and certainly a major point of contention among equipment companies. Which would have no doubt led to a major litigation issue.

There is no doubt in my mind that the R and A came to the table seeking a full ban on the long putter, not to define a stroke.

The proposed ban on anchoring came on Wednesday the 28th. At Tiger’s press conference from Sherwood on Tuesday he suddenly became an opponent of anchoring. Well, I love ya Tiger but, that wasn’t your position a few months ago?

Tiger made it quite clear over the last year that his position was that the putter should be the shortest club in the bag. On Tuesday, the day before the announcement, Tiger told a “little white lie” saying that he had made it clear over the last two years that anchoring was the problem. That’s not true…you changed your position to mirror the actual announcement, which you must have been made aware of in advance.

And that’s ok, 14 majors and $100,000,000 in career earnings will give you some preference.

However, it still bears the question: If they felt Tiger Woods opinion important enough to let him in on the news early, why didn’t they feel his opinion and input on the rule was important (i.e. the putter should be the shortest putter in the bag)?

Well, they did. They just couldn’t reflect it in the proposed rule change.

The rule 14-1b does not outlaw the long putter. This makes it very difficult for an equipment manufacturer to sue the Tour or the USGA or the R and A. How can they sue, the equipment is fine, it’s been left alone.

The R and A doesn’t like the look of the long putter, if they say anything else they’re lying. It has to be aesthetics. They pretty much admitted this during the conference when they said that the increase in adoption was the reason for a ruling now.

What, No Science?

During the live teleconference in which the proposed rule change was made, the governing bodies readily admitted that they had no evidence that anchoring represented any statistical or performance advantages to the player.

Then what’s the problem? Again, they don’t like the look and there is no way they are happy about the idea that the USGA succumbed to legal pressure.

Then they went on to present bungled facts which led to the suggestion that as many as 20% of players are switching to long putters. I’m not sure about that, I play a lot of golf and I watch as much golf as a human can watch and…those numbers are crazy.

Why So Late?

The most egregious aspect of the change is that they waited so long. Why did it take 30 years to change this rule. Actually, why did they OK the concept 30 years ago? Oh wait, they didn’t change a rule they provided a definition.

Ok, then why in the last 600 years has the definition of a putting stroke never come up? Putting is pretty important and it seems as though this would have come up ages ago if it were just a definition.

Here’s the problem with waiting.

3 of the last 5 majors were won by players who were using a long putter with an anchored stroke.

Ernie Else won the Open Championship

Webb Simpson won the US Open

Keegan Bradley won the PGA Championship

Will these three majors now have an invisible asterisk next to them in the record books?

If Keegan Bradley goes on to win 5 more majors, he would be sitting at 6 majors in his career. This would tie him with Nick Faldo and Lee Trevino.  This is pretty thin air.

There is no way you can tell me that the anchored putter factor won’t come into play when the discussion in the bar room comes to Top 15 players all time.

“Well you can’t put Keegan in the same conversation as Lee or Nick because he won his first one with an anchored stroke” Guyat Bar. That’s an asterisk and it’s barely invisible.

What about waiting until 2016?

The official rules of golf is only updated once every 4 years. The next scheduled update is January 2016. The 2012 vintage just came out earlier this year.

Well, this presents an important scheduling conflict. Starting in 2013, the PGA Tour is going to a split calendar season. The 2013 Fall Series will now be the official launch of the 2014 season.

If the rule doesn’t go into effect until January 2016, then the first portion of the 2016 PGA Tour Season will allow the anchored technique and the second half will not.

Further, the long wait is going to bring up the old asterisk question again and again for the next 3 years! The writers who cover the PGA Tour will not be able to control themselves when it comes to raising the anchored putting technique issue, each time a player wins with it.

If the Tour decides that they don’t want to have half a season with one rule and the other half with another, then they will have to bifurcate, at least for a few months.

Bifurcation

The definition of bifurcation is “splitting the main body into two parts”. As it pertains to golf, it means that the PGA Tour would have different rules than You and I.

While I can’t stand the idea of bifurcating the rules of golf, the reality is it already happens.

Three examples of existing bifurcation:

  1. The use of GPS Devices and Laser Range Finders – You and I can use them and the PGA Tour cannot.
  2. Riding a Golf Cart – We can ride a cart but the PGA Tour players cannot.
  3. Wearing Shorts – Tour players cannot wear shorts in tour events, we can wear shorts whenever we like.

The idea of bifurcation is not attractive to me in the case of anchored putting and many other rules which people believe should be bifurcated for the very simple fact that we want to play the same brand of golf as Pros do.

Any serious player with a handicap lower than 8 wants to be able to compare their games to tour players. Even though the comparisons are practically non-existent.

Anchoring Against the Forearm

There is only one Long Putter in the entire golf world which has been left alone…that’s Matt Kuchar’s long putter.

In the spirit of “creativity”, according to Mike Davis Executive Director of the USGA, a grip which anchors the putter against the forearm is fine. He claims that an anchor point below the elbow is actually part of the grip and not a fulcrum point which does whatever it is they’re trying to end.

So…some anchoring is ok and other anchoring is not.

The problem is I don’t see any real winners in this ruling.

Who was upset about the use of long putters? Oh, sorry I mean anchoring a putter, regardless of length?

This is much different than the square groove issue years ago. There were no asterisks created when that ruling came out, everyone used the same groove.

There are only losers as a result of this change:

  • Young kids who have been using the putter for years. It is unlikely that a 16 year old top prospect for the Wake Forrest golf team is now going to be a top prospect unless he can make the change…and fast.
  • Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson and Ernie Else who have all but had a Major stripped from them.
  • Tim Clark who won the Players with his broomstick, he has a wrist issue which prevents him from comfortably putting with a conventional putter and he has had his Players yanked.
  • Bernhardt Langer and Adam Scott who now have to resume putting with conventional grips which….wasn’t working out very well, if you remember.
  • Every single player who has spent the last couple years working on their putting with a long putter.
  • Equipment makers who have spent millions on R & D developing long putters.

Is golf participation a loser? I find it hard to believe that anyone who is playing now with an anchored grip is suddenly going to switch to tennis? That seems like a stretch?

It simply seems that this entire thing is result of a small group of old curmudgeons, sitting in an old clubhouse, at an old course, simply didn’t think the long putter looked old enough.

Again the issue is, there are no winners…nothing advances…no problem is solved?

Why would there be a problem solved? There was no problem to start out with.

Aren’t there more serious issues that could be dealt with?

Putt well, buy a putting green and I guess I’ll settle down. But I still won’t be happy about this stupid rule…sorry definition.

Scramble to Make Money Putts

We all wish we could hit a high draw 6 iron 210 yards. We all wish we had Phil Mickelson’s miracle flop or Bubba’s 360 yard drives.

The reality is…we can’t and the majority of us will never be able to practice enough or build the combo of flexibility + hand eye coordination to hit the ball like a Tour Player. Nope, it’s just not in the cards.

There is something that we can all do which requires very little athletic ability and many have developed this skill to be almost as masterful as an average Tour Player. Short Putts, or as they’re called on Tour – “Money Putts”.

Eight feet and in is known as the “money range” and the best putters in the world drain these money putts at a rate of about 70%. The average Tour Player rolls these in at a rate of about 55%. (Putting Stats 8′ or less)

Hold on, there’s way more to this point.

I know what you’re thinking, you don’t hit it close enough to roll in those money putts from under 8′. Well, you can and you should if you’re serious about lowering your golf scores.

I don’t mean from 180 yards or even from 100 yards (although shame on you for not getting it together from 100 yrds in :)).

I’m talking about getting it up and down consistently, or even a little more consistently.

The average 5 handicapper gets it up and down from off the green at a rate of about 38%.

The average 18 handicapper only gets it up and down from off the green at a rate of about 12%.

There are only two possible reasons why you’re not getting up and down with more consistency:

One – you’re not getting up

Two – you’re not getting down

Good scrambling is a combination of subtle improvements in both, and getting just a little bit better, in each area, will lower your scores and allow you to have more fun on the course. There is nothing more disappointing than standing over a simple chip shot that just missed the green and not getting it up and down. This erodes confidence and places pressure on the rest of your game.

The amazing thing is that getting just a little, tiny bit better in just one of these areas will have an amazing effect on your end results.

Track and Improve

Two summers ago, I began using a golf app on my phone to track stats and evaluate my game. I had no idea how it would lower my scores, well, the app didn’t lower my scores but it did reach out of the phone and slap me across the face.

My scores were stuck in a rut for a period of months ranging between 76 and 82. I’m a member at a rather difficult course which I play all the time and I regularly mix in other courses. I really do take my game seriously, I hit my driver very well, my iron game is solid and wedges are not quite where I want them but, they aren’t bad.

I felt like I had my game together with the exception of putting, which has always been a sore spot. I always assumed that putting was one of those things:

“Putting – you either have it or you don’t…(not true)”

So after about 10 rounds worth of stats on my app, it was glaring that scrambling was the problem. My scrambling statistics showed I was only getting up and down at a rate of about 36%.

I knew I had to either get a lot better at chipping and or putting.

Consistent putting takes the pressure off other parts of your game, ask Luke Donald or Jim Furyk.

The beauty of scrambling is, you don’t need to knock every pitch and chip stiff….if you can drain the Money Putts.

So, I committed to hitting about 40 or 50 putts per day, just trying to find a comfortable stroke. I tried different things, 10 finger grip, weight front and back, arms in, arms out, eye over the ball, eyes back a bit, ball position and all sorts of other things like open stance and such.

You Can Find Something

Guess what? I found something…I’ve heard this “finding something” before and I was always questioning these mythical epiphanies that Tour Players suddenly pull out of the blue, but I had never  actually experienced such a thing myself.

It was all in alignment and simple eye placement, I’m not going to share my something, your something will no doubt be different, who knows what it may be?

The point is without committing to this few minutes per day of hitting putts, I’d still be dropping disappointing scores.

I’m happy to say that my Putts Per Round have gone down by 4 and I’m hitting those Money Putts with consistency. I’m not saying that every birdie putt inside 12′ is rolling in, that wasn’t the point, Scrambling Better was the point.

Once the pressure was off the chip shots due to the moderate improvement in 8′ or less, scores dropped. My handicap has subsequently dipped from the 8.0+/- range to 3.0.

I’m not spending hours at the chipping area, or at the range, I only hit balls and chip shots before a round. It’s all in the putting and chipping.

Attitude Change

On top of grooving a better putting stroke, I changed my attitude surrounding these simple up and down situations. I began to relish the idea that I may have an opportunity to improve on my Scrambling Percentage. What does that mean?

On shots where I miss the green, I will now approach the chip or pitch shot as an opportunity, not as a potential bogey. The opportunity is to improve on my up and down percentage.

Now that my concentration was focused on this positive thought, the negative thoughts rarely enter anymore.

This simple attitude shift altered my entire approach to missing the green, my thought process was different and my numbers shot up to 52% Scrambling.

You don’t need to become Ben Crenshaw, a subtle improvement is all that’s necessary. Success is the sum of small efforts over time, not the result of a profound event.

The most amazing aspect that I discovered was that my chipping results improved once those negative thoughts disappeared and the par putts are now even shorter than ever.

I’m not having these epic putting sessions, it’s the simple process of hitting putts from inside 8 feet and doing it with confidence.

If you do have a putting green, use it and use it regularly. If you don’t that’s fine too, work on your attitude around the greens. Change roadblocks to opportunities and I think you’ll be happy with the results.

The Best Golf Course On Earth – by Trump

Donald Trump’s New International Golf Links Aberdeenshire, Scotland

I’ve had the chance to see Donald give a keynote speech on two occasions and here’s the deal, he knows far more about creating the worlds greatest golf course than he does about giving a great speech!

Given the preliminary reviews and images of Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen, Scotland it appears as though we may be witnessing a Masterpiece.

The course will open to public play on July 1, 2012

If you’ve ever played a brand new golf course that hasn’t had the chance to grow into itself, you know how hard it is to create a track that looks like a classic in its immaturity. Trump’s new course will prove to be the exception to this rule.

Greatest Golf Track Ever

“Looking Good” Doesn’t Cover It

As of March 2, 2012, the course known as Trump International Golf Links is sitting in pristine, untouched condition just waiting to attract golf’s most avid fans from all over the world.

I have to admit, it is rare I hear about a course being built and think “Wow, I need to get out there!”. Well, this is certainly one of those courses, as a matter of fact I wouldn’t be surprised to hear reviews that hail this course as The Best On Earth early and often.

Trump’s commitment to great golf is nothing new, his perfectionist antics have been on display for some time on the Golf Channel featuring his Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New Jersey and San Juan courses to name a few. The guy yearns for greatness in his people and his courses, for that you have to admire the man regardless of his sometimes nauseating use of hyperbole and self promotion.

Trump International Aberdeen Location

Donald Trump’s golf masterpiece sits on miles of previously untouched dunes on the Northeast Coast of Scotland. The beautiful coastline was thought to be “untouchable” by bull dozers and greens keepers. When the Donald first visited the now famous piece of land in 2005, he made up his mind that this would be the home of the World’s Greatest Golf Course.

Great Oceanside Golf

The Scottish Seaside

He bought the land called The Menie Estate for $10,000,000 and the gentleman that sold it to him asked him what his plan was for the land. Trump told him he intended to build the greatest golf course on earth.

The man responded quite simply with “No way will you ever get that approved”.

Well guess what, 5 years in court, false approvals that were overturned, more fights, including a classic Trump brawl with an abutter to the property, he finally got the project approved and construction began in July 2010.

Trump Wasted no time in renaming the “Menie Dunes” he now calls them “The Great Dunes of Scotland”.

Trump Delivers

Let’s not waste any more time and get right into the spectacular imagery which was inspired by a man who knows a thing or two about imagery, Trump and a popular European Golf Course Architect, Martin Hawtree. There is no doubt that Trump had final say on many aspects of the design, per usual.

Did You Know? Hawtree & Sons is the oldest and longest running golf course designer in the world.

If these pictures of the soon to be famous Trump International Golf Links, don’t get you up out of your seat, digging around looking to see when your passport expires, then you need to check your pulse.

Don’t leave the green until you have hit 10 in a row from these vital distances. Some days it will take 5 minutes and some days it will take 2 hours.

Don’t hit them all from the same spot, placing them in a circle with a fresh pre-putt routine on each putt is the key!

The World’s Fastest Putting Greens

Fast and Furious: Who Has Golf’s Toughest Greens? Guest Post by Daniel Mitchell

You think the greens on your home course are pretty fast, don’t you?

You go around bragging about the latest double-digit Stimpmeter reading, telling everybody about that time the pro from the club next door racked up six four-putts, how you’ve seen guys knock 2-footers clear off the green.

I’ve got news for you, buddy – you haven’t seen tough until you’ve putted the greens at Oakmont.

I’m telling you, these greens are fast. (Obliging audience member: “How fast are they?”) Oakmont’s greens are so fast, they have to slow ’em down for the U.S. Open.

The worlds fastest putting greens

No joke. Legend has it Oakmont’s greens reach head-spinning Stimpmeter readings around 14-15 feet on a regular basis. That’s brutally fast on flat greens – and Oakmont’s greens are not flat. The course traipses up and down the hilly farm country outside Pittsburgh, Pa., and the enormous putting surfaces match the topography.

One more thing about Oakmont: The Stimpmeter was invented there. True story. A guy named Edward Stimpson was watching the 1935 U.S. Open and witnessed the great Gene Sarazen putt off a green and into a bunker. Stimpson thought, ‘Hmmm, these are some pretty slick greens… Now if we only knew how slick.’

It took 40 years before Stimpson’s ingeniously simple contraption was put into widespread use. These days, you can’t pull up a stool at the 19thhole without hearing some yutz brag about how his club’s greens were “stimping” at 11 the other day.

Next time, just tell him Oakmont’s roll faster than that uphill, with a fresh layer of top-dressing, in the middle of a downpour. That ought to shut him up.

Besides Oakmont, there are two other world-famous courses that can legitimately lay claim to the world’s toughest greens: Augusta National and Royal Melbourne. Here’s a quick look at both.

Augusta National: The Perverse Joy of 4-Putts

Maybe you’ve heard of this sporty little track in the sleepy Georgia town of Augusta?

Every golfer knows about Augusta’s ferociously fast, massively undulating greens. Nobody knows, however, just how fast they are. The green jackets would sooner welcome a female member than release an official Stimpmeter reading.

Fastest Putting Greens in the World

Part of the joy of watching the Masters every April is seeing Augusta’s greens tie the world’s best players in knots. (Admittedly, it’s a perverse kind of joy.) I’ve seen pros break down in tears after leaving themselves a downhill 2-footer for par. OK, so I made that up. But I did see Seve Ballesteros four-putt No. 16 once. His final three strokes came from no more than a yard away.

The horrifying incident did lead to one of my all-time favorite lines. Asked afterward how he managed to four-jack, the Spaniard deadpanned, “I miss, I miss, I miss, I make.”

Put me on Augusta’s greens (Oh please, put me on Augusta’s greens!) and I fear the results would mirror Seve’s, with a twist: I miss, I miss, I miss, I rake.

Royal Melbourne: Evil, Pure Evil

American audiences got a rare glimpse at this glorious place during the 2011 Presidents Cup. The only thing more fun than watching the USA walk all over the Internationals was seeing Royal Melbourne at its very best.

Like Augusta, Royal Melbourne’s greens are the handiwork of Dr. Alister MacKenzie, widely considered golf’s greatest architect. The similarities don’t end there. The wavy surfaces at Royal Melbourne are kept firm and cut low, producing insane speeds that would give mere mortals a coronary.

When the wind is up, as it often is in southeastern Australia, Royal Melbourne’s greens are nothing short of evil. Pure evil.

If I’m ever lucky enough to play Royal Melbourne, Oakmont or Augusta National, you just might hear me at the nearest 19th hole. I’ll be the yutz telling people they don’t know jack about tough greens.

Daniel Mitchell is a golf writer who lives in Jupiter, Fla., a few miles from Tiger Woods as the crow flies but worlds away in every other respect. An avid golfer since age 12, Mitchell carries a (shaky) single-digit handicap, investing far more time in his dogs than his swing.

World’s Fastest Putting Greens

Indoor Golf Greens | Home or Office

Indoor Golf Greens used to be either just something for the wealthy or simply not realistic enough to gain any valuable putting practice.

The developments in putting turf technology used for indoor greens has changed both factors and now you can own a green for a fraction of the previous prices and drastically improve your short game.

At Pro Putt Systems we are in the process of changing the indoor golf industry, one green at a time.

High Value Combined with Great Quality

We chose to bring only the highest quality components to the market when we were conceiving our first greens. We researched putting turf suppliers, base panel materials and ALL of the competition.

Indoor Golf Green

We wanted to make sure we brought indoor golf to the next level in every possible way. That said, we chose Mirage TourPutt Ultimate turf. We were very familiar with Mirage as we had been building outdoor greens for nearly 10 years utilizing Mirage turf.

We didn’t just rest on that, we received samples of turf from 6 major suppliers and ran numerous tests to be sure that our previous belief in this putting turf wasn’t somehow shaded by our very positive experience in the past.

After all the tests including but hardly limited to, trueness of roll, how the turf accepts chip shots, overall durability, look and feel plus overall playability, we decided that there was nothing out there that matched Mirage.

The 10 Year Warranty that backs the putting turf is really a major distinction between us and others, as you look around, you will find most suppliers only offer a 3 year warranty some only 1 year. That didn’t make us very comfortable even considering marketing another manufacturer’s turf.

There are greens that are far less expensive than ours, no doubt about it. But, buying a $400 indoor golf green that only lasts 2 years and never provides for great putting practice, really doesn’t do you much good at all. Conversely, our greens will last for a decade and always provide for great practice, the turf keeps getting better with age.

It’s really impossible to argue that Mirage is the most realistic putting turf available. The key factor with Mirage turf is the LACK of SAND FILL. There are exceptional turf suppliers that rely on sand infill to make their greens function properly.

Golf Green for Indoor

A huge part of our thought process when considering materials was the idea that these greens are not just indoor greens they are also highly functional outdoor greens as well. If the materials lacked in any way from a quality standpoint this simply could not be realized. We are confident that your putting green will be just as great and last just as long outdoor as it will indoor.

Simple and Easy Indoor Golf

An important aspect of our beginning thoughts was the idea that we could create a high quality indoor golf green that could be created in our facility and then delivered to the customer who can then set the green up with ease, usually in less than 20 minutes.

Previously, the installation of and indoor golf green very much resembled the outdoor business. An installer needed to come to the home and install. No longer is this the case, anyone can install their own green now with ease and you won’t even need to own a single tool.

Perfecting Your Putting Stroke

We love golf and we wanted to be absolutely positive that we are supplying a great golf practice device.

Achieving a perfect putting stroke is something that requires years of practice. You don’t need to be a Tour Player to be a great putter either. Golf has developed in recent years to the point where there are some really good players that….just play for fun.

Entertainment Value

Kids Love Indoor Golf GreensFun, this is almost as important as any other factor. We wanted to bring greens into the marketplace that were both Great Practice Aids but also very enjoyable. Kids love them, and the whole family can get significant enjoyment from an indoor golf green and they can do it on a rainy day, winter snowy day, early in the morning and late at night.

I had visited a home with an indoor green a few years earlier, the green looked ok, it was certainly better than anything I had seen in the past but, the guy didn’t let his kids play on it. We really wanted to make sure that we were supplying a level of quality that could withstand use, a lot of use, even from kids!

Our putting greens become centerpieces in homes for entertaining.

The Office

Indoor greens aren’t just for the home either. They have become very popular in offices throughout the country.

They are also wildly popular in places where, people have to wait. Doctor’s offices, auto dealerships and the like are now realizing the value in indoor golf.

Trade Shows

The trade show industry has realized the benefits of indoor putting as well. Take a stroll around any major trade show and more often than not you will find companies using portable greens as marketing tools and lead generation tools. Smart companies by the way.

First Class Customer Service

When you order a golf green from Pro Putt Systems, we can assure you that your request will be handled with care. We love designing custom greens. So much that we are insanely fair when it comes to the price you will pay for our custom greens.

We believe that part of customer service has to do with delivering value. That’s how we would want to be treated and we know that you would expect nothing less.

So, now you know a little bit more about our philosophy and how we expect to change indoor golf for the better!

Indoor Golf Greens by Pro Putt Systems

Simple Indoor Putting Drills

We want to take a moment and introduce our newest model, The Ultimate Putting Trainer.

This putting green was the request of our customers who were in search of a high quality indoor putting system that allows for a number of various basic putting drills.

This design is well on its way to becoming our hottest model!

putting greens for indoor drills

The design considers the simple putting drill that made Tiger the putter he was for so many years. Many people refer to this drill as “Around the World” the idea is that you would not leave the green until you were able to master the most important putt on the the course, the dreaded 3 and 4 footer.

Suggested Reading: 7 Putting Drills to Help You Avoid 3-Putts

How do you master these putts? By hitting 10 in a row with no misses in the middle.

This putting drill will teach you discipline and once you’re disciplined enough to hit these crucial putts with consistency, the result will be lower scores.

How many times have you been in the situation where you have a little short par putt that may or may not even break…and you miss it? (usually there is very little break in putts of this distance)

Not only have you added a stroke to your scorecard but, you’re not feeling very confident on the walk to the next tee. These miserable little walks will more often than not, cause a less than desirable tee shot as well.

Let’s end that!

Golf is hard enough without missing those little par putts.

The idea behind this simple drill is raw discipline. Customarily, high handicap players don’t even practice short putts, they practice lag putts and putts with a lot of bend.

More experienced golfers always start and end their putting warm up by hitting short putts from within 3 to 5 feet.

Why is this?

Good players want to experience a couple things prior to starting their round:

  1. They want to get the “feel”of hitting a few putts in a row
  2. They want to build confidence and have “good thoughts”once they’re standing over the real deal
  3. They also want to “hear” the ball drop into the cup

By combining the physical and mental aspects of putting, they will experience better on course results.

Tiger’s Putting Drill

Place the balls in a semi-circle around the cup as shown below.

Tiger Woods Putting Drill

Position the balls in a semi-circle shape for this drill

You want to hit these putts with a defined pre-shot routine for each stroke. Whatever your pre-shot routine is, be sure you use it each time you line up a putt. More on that in a minute.

The secret is to hit these from a different angle and slightly different distance on each putt.

Most importantly you want to have the discipline to hit these consecutively, ten in a row, don’t leave the green until you have hit all ten in a row. If you have to get going and you are out of time, you’ll notice the nerves showing up once you are at consecutive putt number 7 or 8 and number 10 will really replicate on course pressure!

Putting Drill for Distance Control

Here is a very simple putting drill that will teach you distance control on the intermediate putts.

Place the balls on your putting green in a staggered fashion as shown below.

Putting Drill for Distance Control

Position the balls in a staggered fashion as shown

Hit each of these putts starting with #1 and so on. You’ll notice that each putt is from a slightly different range and each putt could have a slightly different break, assuming you decide to add some break to the green in front of the hole. Also, the putts are arranged so distances are varying shorter, to longer then back to shorter. This works better than hitting consecutive putts that are getting progressively longer or shorter.

Again, be sure to complete a fresh pre-putt routine before each shot. There is no point in practicing putting drills if you aren’t simulating the real thing.

Meaningful Practice is Key – Otherwise you’re just playing games and not learning any muscle memory or discipline.

A Good Pre-Putt Routine

Dave Stockton, a legendary putting coach, suggests that if you don’t have a specific and duplicable pre-putt routine, DEVELOP ONE.

Testimonial So Good We Made It A Post

Although my daughters have had clubs in their hands since they could literally stand, last year was our first year of actually competing in the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Tournaments. It was a tremendous experience! We had an opportunity to travel, play some great courses, and as an added bonus we met some incredible people along the way. One such person is Brett at Pro Putt Systems!

As a parent of a young golfer certain memories stand out. Last year at the State Championship I remember coming into the turn and my daughter was only four strokes back. I asked her, “Babe, where do you think the difference is?” She simply responded, “My putting.” To make a long story short and after a low sugar crash (Type 1 Diabetic) the gap eventually widened, but in the end she came in 2nd Place and won the Long Drive Competition (244 yards) and left learning a very valuable lesson. She learned that in order to stay in contention she had to be a better putter. That is where Brett and the folks at Pro Putt Systems come into play.

We recently moved into our new home and coming from a condo we had a lot more space to fill. So one day while we were all sitting around trying to figure out what to fill the space with my girls asked, “Dad what about an indoor putting green?” Up until that point I never considered a putting green. We are a family of golfers and I am thinking of a pool table or more furniture. Golfers getting a pool table that makes perfect sense! Well, after looking at the space it dawned on us that a putting green would not only be a good investment but also a great conversation piece. Seriously, how many people do you know with an indoor putting green? Plus, the girls cleverly threw in that they could practice when it was cold, dark, or raining. What dad could say “no” to that?

So we scoured the Internet in search of the best indoor putting green we could find and were fortunate to come across Pro Putt Systems. NOTHING and I mean NOTHING even came close to the quality and customer service!

Their responses to questions were quick, friendly and extremely helpful. The time invested in designing your particular model is unparalleled. The folks at Pro Putt Systems will go the extra length to make sure you are completely happy and I could not be more thankful to them for taking the time to get our model just right. When I sent the picture of our model to our friends the quote was, “We can’t wait to come over to your house and play!”

Golf has been a blessing to us in so many ways! It is something we enjoy as a family and is a source of pride to see our girls excelling at such an amazing sport. What I love about the game of golf is that it teaches some very valuable life lessons but most importantly you are able to establish some remarkable relationships such as the one we now have with Brett and Pro Putt Systems. Thanks for everything!

Real Bent Side by Side w Pro Putt Systems TourPutt Ultimate

These are very popular questions here at Pro Putt Systems, so we wanted to take a moment and discuss the most important factors when considering an indoor putting surface.
The most important aspects of putting practice on artificial surfaces are:

  1. Durability
  2. Realistic Roll
  3. True Roll
  4. Look
  5. Feel
  6. Value
  7. Customization
  8. Portability

Let’s cover these factors one by one:

  • Durability – is the turf durable and warrantied for a long period of time against fading or wearing?

Pro Putt Systems ONLY uses Mirage Tour Putt for our indoor/outdoor putting greens. This putting turf is designed to be subjected to the harshest conditions that can be found in the United States.

It can stand up to the baking desert sun of Arizona or the harshest winter conditions and drastic temperature swings in a place like Maine. It doesn’t just last a year or two, it’swarrantied for a full 10 years against even the toughest outdoor conditions.

It’s safe to say that this putting turf could practically last a lifetime in indoor environments. We’re proud to offer the most realistic putting turf and the most durable turf simultaneously.

  • Realistic Roll – does the ball roll pure on the turf without bouncing and skipping?

Some companies don’t really design true indoor practice greens, what they’re really offering are toys. In order to get the best putting practice on a synthetic surface you must be practicing on turf that rolls correctly. The golf ball shouldn’t bounce along the turf and it shouldn’t skip along the turf, that is not realistic putting.

The ball should roll evenly along the turf just like you’re putting on a real bent grass green.

  • True Roll – does the ball roll evenly in each and every direction?

Not only is a smooth roll incredibly important but, the trueness of the roll is an important factor as well. Natural greens, particularly southern warm weather greens like Bermuda Greens do have a slight bit of “grain break”. Learning how to ready grain break can make or break a high level player.

However, an artificial putting green with grain break is not a good characteristic at all. Grain break in synthetic greens simply means that the individual fibers are made on a machine that weaves the material in a specific row each and every time. This row creates an unnatural grain break that can considerably hinder your practice and overall alignment.

Realistic Artificial Putting Turf

Most Realistic Turf – Close Up Photo

Our turf is specifically designed to avoid these unnatural breaks. The individual fibers are tightly woven and distributed in a slightly uneven manner at the surface. This creates that realistic and true roll just like you would expect on an organic putting green.

  • Look – does the turf look real?

The turf should have and maintain a dark green lush look for years. Our turf is multicolored in nature but it has an incredibly realistic dark green look. The background color or the color beneath the ball is important to your overall practice efforts, distance and alignment control are dominated by color to the eye.

If the color beneath the golf ball on your practice green are completely different from what you go out and play on, your natural eye coordination will be affected negatively.

  • Feel – does the turf feel very realistic when you’re standing on it?

The feel beneath your feet may just seem like a luxury requirement but, many golf professionals will tell you that they feel the line and speed with their feet. Again, when you are practicing on a surface that does not match the real thing, your practice will be negatively impacted.

  • Value – quite simply, is the putting green worth the investment?

There are indoor putting greens that are far less expensive than ours, just as there are greens that are far more expensive than ours. While opinions are many and strong as to why that is we know for a fact that we are providing our customers with an amazing level of overall value.

We’re not jacking up our prices to pay a short game or putting guru.

We’re using the best available putting turf combined with the best base, in this area….we have no competition.

We have searched the deepest areas of the indoor putting world and we literally cannot find a competitor that provides the value that we provide here at Pro Putt Systems.

We encourage you to do your due diligence, look around at our competition, be careful to read all the fine print and disclaimers. You simply won’t find value like ours anywhere. Specifically peek at the warranty periods, most of our competitors are only warrantying their putting turf for 3 years, occasionally you’ll see 5 years but more often you’ll find 1 – 3 years max.

  • Customization – can you get a custom shape or sized indoor putting surface?

Quality, playability, look and feel are very important, but one of the things that really sets us apart from the rest is the ability to create custom indoor putting greens. Customizations are standard in outdoor putting greens but until now this hasn’t been offered indoor without paying a very dear price.

We design and ship numerous custom indoor greens for our clients each month and this unique ability has really set us apart from the competition.

  • Portability – can I move my green around my property?

In the past a putting green was always considered a permanent fixture in a home. Once the green was installed it couldn’t be moved. Not only could you not move it around your property but, you couldn’t move it with you if you were to sell your home.

Pro Putt Systems greens are completely portable, you can move it around your home with ease and of course if you were to sell your home you can move it to your new home.

Who Offers The Most Realistic Putting Turf?

All in all, we offer the very best putting turf in the world, it’s made right here in the USA and each green is carefully made by humans to be sure that you truly are getting the best and most realistic putting turf available today.

If you are seeking the very best putting surface in the world with all the features mentioned above please, feel free to contact us with any questions so we can make your dream a reality.

Trade Show Putting Greens

At Pro Putt Systems we want to officially announce our line of Trade Show Putting Greens.

The trade show industry is enormous and companies are constantly looking for ways to get more “worthy” traffic to their booths. Engaging prospects with a dynamic, interactive booth is a great way to not only grow traffic but also engage in a unique way.

  • Attract
  • Entertain
  • Convert

Those first two are the main factors to building relationships at trade shows, the last is up to you. But, if you aren’t ATTRACTING and ENTERTAINING you’ll never get those conversions.

There is an overwhelming fact, that cannot be argued, Decision Makers love golf.  Golf is an incredibly important tool in the corporate world. It is part of the recruiting process, part of the client retention process and a huge part of the deal making process.

If you want to attract the decision makers at your next convention, expo or trade show then you need a trade show putting green.

Throw Down A Challenge

In Dale Carnegie’s legendary book, How To Win Friends and Influence People, Carnegie makes a great point. The idea of throwing down a challenge, particularly to a decision maker, works. It is a great way to engage an A-Type personality.

A Putting Challenge will get the staunchest CEO to put down the little bag of convention junk and try to roll a 15 footer for a (…insert give away here…).

The point is you could give away a 6 ounce Gold Bar in exchange for a filled out form, and that same Decision Maker won’t even glance twice at your booth as he walks by with the “Don’t talk to me, please” look on his face.

You throw down the epic putting challenge, he’ll do whatever it takes to show off his “clutch under pressure” putting skills.

Golf (particularly putting) brings out a primal instinct, the idea of the crowd watching, passersby judging, the challenge, oh…it’s just a putt at a trade show. He doesn’t know this though, to him he may as well be trying to birdie 18 at Augusta in early April.

A Trade Show Putting Green will be the best investment you will ever make in your convention booth. Simple to set up, easy to transport, amazing quality, the type of quality that will really impress your prospects.

Did I mention, we can put your company logo right on the green to maximize your exposure.

But wait, what about after the convention? Oh yeah, you can set up and transport the putting green so easily, you can have a putting green in the break room or maybe even YOUR OFFICE.

If you have any questions about how to drastically improve your booth from now on, feel free to contact us, we’ll help you out, that’s what we do.

By the way, how do we know that putting greens work so well?

We set up our greens at shows all the time, we generate over 100 qualified prospects at each show by running simple, irresistible, putting contests.

Don’t miss this. Take a look at our two main trade show models, the Green Monster is great for booths 10 x 20. If you have custom needs, no problem, we can help you out there too.

Is Your Green a Sand Trap?

For years synthetic putting greens required messy sand dressing in order to function properly. Many people still believe that sand is required in order for your artificial putting green to function properly.

Guess what! No sand here!

Sand was great… in the 90’s, but here in the modern era you’ll no longer need messy sand to achieve great playability and top quality feel.

The sand was required because nylon was used as the grass and the individual fibers were not dense enough to stand up on their own. In order to keep the individual strands of fiber from matting you would have to periodically pour sand over the green and rub it in with heavy commercial brooms.

Over time the sand would become uneven and the entire green would essentially need to be flipped over and beat like an old rug. Also, whenever an organic substance is added you dramatically increase the presence of mold because the sand holds water for an extended period of time.

As time goes on the nylon fibers become ground down from the abrasive nature of the sand infill and eventually your putting green is rolling more like a freshly paved parking lot than a real putting green.

This is great for the installer because every couple years the customer would require significant maintenance, creating a recurring income stream for the putting green guy.

No Sand Here

Mirage TourPutt, the official putting surface of Pro Putt Systems was developed from years of research and testing. The beauty of TourPutt is the fact that it is so well designed and manufactured with such precision that the polypropylene fibers are specially designed to stand up completely independent of any filling medium.

As you can see in this close up image of Mirage Turf, the fibers are multi-directional and multi-textured in order to create the natural look and most importantly, feel that you would expect in a professional grade putting green. The putting surface is so well designed that you won’t experience any unnatural “grain breaks” that some artificial putting greens have.

You also won’t hear that scuffing sound from skidding, when you strike your putt, even on long putts.

mirage tourputt turf without sand

Our Turf Magnified – Natural Look No Sand Needed

The putting turf is warrantied against wear and fading for a full 10 years.

There is virtually no maintenance required, occasionally you would need to sweep it off and generally keep it clean but you certainly will not need a technician to come in and beat it like a rug every couple years.

Further, how else could you ever put a putting green in your home if it required 5 bucket loads of sand in order to function properly? The answer there is simple, it was previously impossible to have a top quality putting green inside.

If you are considering a sand filled putting green indoor or out, consider the alternative, you will be very happy in the long run.

  • No Mold
  • No Mess
  • No Wear from Grinding
  • No Fading
  • Perfect Roll
  • Great Look

There are certain instances where a little bit of sand can make sense. If you are putting your artificial green in a place where you will be hitting pitch shots from a distance of greater than 20 yards or more, then it will make sense to put a little bit of high quality colored sand in your green. If you decide to go this way be ready for the long term maintenance issues.

We have tested our indoor, sand-less putting greens for chip shots of 20-25 feet and the ball lands, checks, and rolls just like you would expect on the practice green at your club.

If your serious about your indoor / outdoor putting and chipping practice on a tour quality surface, Pro Putt is your answer.

Besides, who wants a sand filled mildew mess in your home?

Indoor Practice Putting Greens

In honor of Gary Player’s Birthday and his famous quote:

“The more I practice, the luckier I get”

When we set out to make the best indoor practice putting greens on the market, we took a good look around at the competition.

What we found appears to be some people selling putting greens that have never really practiced putting?

Popular Article: 7 Putting Drills You can do at Home

By the looks of the indoor practice greens out there, it really did look in most cases like the designer had never actually picked up a putter. Well, that’s odd? You put mini golf putting carpet on your indoor practice green?

What are you practicing? Mini-golf or full size golf?

At Pro Putt Systems we truly do want you to “Putt Like A Pro” and a pro would never find themselves putting on cheap putting carpet, that may work for the World Mini-Golf Championships but it won’t give you good solid meaningful putting practice.

There’s a big difference between putting carpet and top quality Mirage TourPutt Turf.

Top quality putting turf is essential to actual practice putting, meaningful, long lasting, putting practice. You know, the kind of indoor putting practice where you actually improve your putting.

Our materials are realistic enough for any golfer to not only enjoy, but really enjoy… the results.

Results are the key and if you’re putting on carpet, well, you don’t need us for that kind of practice. Head down to the carpet store.

Also, we dumped the fringe, indoor practice greens do not need fringe! Fringe may look good but, let’s face it, we’re limited on space!

Can you practice chipping, yes! From a 4’ x 4’ portable chipping area, these other guys have fringe right next to the turf, Gary Player putts from there!

When was the last time you chipped form the fringe with 4 inches of fringe to clear on the course?

Invest In Your Putting Practice

Indoor Practice Putting Greens

Portable Putting Greens from Pro Putt Systems

Every good golfer knows that the number 1 way to lower your golf scores is to practice putting.

Portable Indoor Putting Greens are a great way to develop your putting skills.

At Pro Putt Systems each of our pre-packaged putting green models are completely portable. Our portable putting greens are designed to give you all the functionality of a traditional putting green in the comfort and warmth of your own home.

Tour Pro Portable Putting Green

Tour Pro Portable Putting Green

There are companies that offer home putting greens in many shapes and sizes but you will find our portable indoor / outdoor putting greens are both beautiful and incredibly realistic.

We Don’t Pay Gurus!

Not to mention we don’t have to pay a putting guru for an endorsement.

Pro Putt Systems greens have been carefully designed so they can be placed in any room in your home during the winter months and then out in your yard during the summer.

Our designs feature an interlocking base system that will lift your putting surface off the ground at least 2.625 inches at their thinnest point and once you add shims for undulation the portable green will have a drop into the cup of as much as 3.5 inches.

You will notice that most of our portable pre-packaged putting green models do not feature fringe. Why is that?

During research of other indoor green companies we have found that fringe is nothing more than a way to add worthless square footage to their green models.

If you wish to add fringe to your putting green from Pro Putt Systems, we can certainly add it for you and this will add some aesthetic value with very little actual practice value.

Our greens are designed by golfers for golfers with the intent of creating the best available putting practice environment without wasting square footage that you will have to pay for  and add little practice value.

What makes our putting greens so portable?

  • The turf itself will roll into a cylinder shaped roll with a length of between 6’ and 10’ and a roll depth of between 8” and 14”, depending on what size putting green you decide on.
  • The interlocking panel base system  comes with holes for screws built in however we have found actually screwing the base system together is not at all necessary.
  • The base system panels measure 22.75” x 22.75” and easily fit into specially designed, high quality duffel bags for convenience and easy portability.

Portable Putting Greens for Home

The duffel bag and the nature of the interlocking base system makes Pro Putt Systems greens the most portable on the market.

  • Highest functionality
  • Most realistic putting surface
  • Highest quality putting turf (10 yr Warranty)
  • Best value indoor putting green on the market

Take a moment to look around the site, we offer a number of pre-packaged indoor / outdoor portable greens for you to choose from.

If you would like to design your own putting green for your home we can help you do that as well. Simply request a design consultation and remember the beauty of our green systems is the fact that each of them are completely portable.

Even if you design a custom green you can transport the green with you if you move or decide to simply change the location of the green within your home or yard.

These factors and the use of the best putting surface on earth, makes Pro Putt Systems the best portable putting greens on the market.
