Are you looking to upgrade your simulator turf? Most golf simulators come with some basic turf materials. These sim packages may not be the best turf solutions available, but they’ll do the trick until you realize what is available for simulator turf.
Traditional home simulator turf setups look like the image below. They have simple landing turf so the ball doesn’t click around the room and a hitting mat you can stand on.
This type of simulator turf works in the beginning, especially for those who have yet to learn the upgrades they can make to their golf room.
If you’re ready to upgrade your sim turf flooring, keep reading. We have been augmenting sim rooms with great turf solutions since (2010) back before indoor golf was cool!
People come to us for simulator turf upgrades for the following reasons:
- I want to putt to real holes, not aim at targets
- I want to add chipping to my sim room
- I want to upgrade to a mat that can be inset and flush with my putting surface
- I want to add undulation for breaking putts
- I want to add a fringe border for aesthetics
- I want to raise my turf flooring on a base system so I can switch to a small hitting strip
Let’s run through some options to upgrade your golf room!
Notice: placing cheap foam under your turf is never an option!
1) D-Base and Premium Sim Turfs in Varying Colors
D-Base is a molded interlocking panel system that lifts the turf off the ground by .75″. This panel is a huge upgrade over foam solutions commonly used by simulator installers.
While we can place low-profile cups (.875″ deep) in the surface of a D-Base green, the total height is not ideal for putting solutions as a golf ball is 1.68″ so there is not a lot of space to drop in a cup.
This low-cost yet highly functional base panel system comes in sections just over 10″ x 10″ each. It features a molded, click-on transition edge for ease of installation and a handy corner piece. D-Base panels can handle up to 175 lbs per square inch (PSI) of pressure.
We offer varying grades of putting turf on top of the D-Base panel to achieve a total height between 1″ and 1.25″.
The height of your Hitting Mat will match the combined height of the D-Base and the Putting Turf so the following hitting mats are ideal for inset in your simulator turf setup or work well for an edge finish.
Now, pick the way you’d like to finish your edge:
- putting turf draped over the edge and held with double-sided tape
- fringe border draping over the edge of the panel
- a custom solution like fringe draped and fastened to the floor with reducer strip (reducer strip is popular in commercial environments)
Popular D-Base and Sim Turf System sizes:
11′ 4″ wide x 14′ 2″ deep with a 2′ x 4′ inset hitting mat
9′ 3″ wide x 13′ 3″ deep with a 8′ x 4′ inset hitting mat
THE WIDTH OF YOUR ROOM x 14′ 2″ deep
Hitting Mat will usually be 4′ x 8′ but we can inset hitting strips as well
These are just suggestions, and you can choose almost any size hitting mat or sim green you want.
Check out the look of D-Base Panel with Pro Putt Tour Black Putting Turf and our 50/50 Hitting Mat (50% Black Fibers and 50% Green fibers). This modern look will make you the envy of your golf buddies!
D-Base pricing will be $8 to $11 per sq ft (plus freight), depending upon which turfs you choose and of course, your size.
2) O-Base with Premium Putting and Hitting Turfs
This base system is also a molded plastic solution that functions similarly to D-Base; however, it is 1.0″ thick, and the panel footprint is exactly 2′ x 2′.
The extra size offers an upgrade in terms of thickness and ease of installation. There are fewer pieces to deal with and extra thickness, so you can upgrade your hitting mat.
O-Base is 1.0″ thick, and the putting turf options we usually sell with O-Base are either .40″ or .50″ thickness, creating a total thickness of 1.50″. This panel system can handle pressure of up to 150 lbs per sq inch (PSI) and locks vertically to the panel next to it; in other words, the panels can be dropped vertically, a nice feature during installation.
The O-Base Sim Turf upgrade is the thinnest system we would suggest for a higher-quality hitting mat like Real Feel Country Club Elite (1.75″ thickness) or similar.
With a quality nylon putting turf .50″ thickness and the O-Base System (1.50″ total thickness), your hitting mat will be just a tiny bit higher than the surrounding putting surface, but it is barely noticeable.
Now, pick the way you’d like to finish your edge:
- putting turf draped over the edge with a fabricated (by PPS) transition – works best when we fill left to right and only transition at the back of the simulator green
- 6″ fringe border draped over the edge with double-sided tape and a fabricated transition
- putting turf wrapped on the edge and stapled to the side of the panel
- custom fringe with adhesive reducer strip (again, common in commercial environments
Popular Residential O-Base and Sim Turf System sizes:
13′ wide x 12′ 6″ deep with 6″ fringe border and 8′ x 4′ inset hitting mat
11′ wide x 14′ 6″ deep with 6″ fringe border and inset hitting strip
THE WIDTH OF YOUR ROOM x 14′ 6″ deep
Custom Sizes are always available; tell us about your space, and we can make it work.
O-Base is thick enough to sink in Low Profile Cups and the ball will stay in the cup.
Commercial indoor golf facilities and indoor training centers love O-Base because it offers the extra height needed for a Premium Simulator Hitting Mat.
O-Base pricing will be $19 to $21 per sq ft (plus freight), depending upon which turfs you choose and of course, your size.
3) Elite-Base with Premium Putting and Hitting Turfs
The classic 2″ thick Elite-Base is one of the products on which Pro Putt Systems was built. Its incredible durability and superb functionality make this interlocking panel system the most popular in indoor golf.
With the 2″ interlocking panel and premium nylon, putting turf, the system equals a total height (without undulation) of 2.50″. The panel’s effective footprint is 23″ x 23″, and it comes in 6 geometric shapes. The full panels weigh 8 lbs each, and you can actually drive a truck on them if you want.
The height allows you to insert almost any premium hitting mat, True Strike Gel Section, Real Feel CCE, Commercial Grade Tee Line, or 50/50 Black / Green Tee Line. Any mat not equalling 2.50″ can simply be shimmed to the exact height of the putting surface.
Elite-Base has a number of premium features and benefits:
- 2.50″ height (with turf) allows for a perfect drop into the regulation diameter cups.
- PPS Turf and Elite-Base panels are designed to work together to dissipate energy for realistic check-and-run on-chip and pitch shots. If you spin it, it will land with spin. If you bump and run it, it will run out like you’d expect.
- The panels will contour to the undulation material we fabricate and place beneath the panel system for smooth, realistic breaks and undulations.
- Even the thickest premium sim mats can be inset to be flush with the surface.
- For floor-mount launch monitors or golf-swing camera systems, the power and interface cables can be channeled in the underside of the panel, hiding all the wires.
We have used the Elite-Base panel system in some of the finest teaching facilities, most significant college golf programs, and highest-end home simulator setups.
We use this panel in our Custom Simulator Greens and Standard Model Simulator Greens.
Now, pick the way you’d like to finish your edge:
- molded bump rail border (black border in standard model pics)
- 10″ transition wedge obscured by fringe material
- sink the whole 2.5″ system in your sim room
Popular sizes for Elite-Base Greens:
9′ 7″ x 13′ 5″ with bump rail border
15′ x 20′ with a fabricated fringe border
THE WIDTH OF YOUR ROOM x 16′ deep
Let’s bring your simulator turf dreams to life!
We offer custom and standard sizes that can be professionally installed with all the bells and whistles, or we can re-create your space in our build shop and cut a custom simulator green that we freight ship to you for self-installation.
Elite-Base pricing will range from $29 to $32 per sq ft (plus freight). Larger projects with less complexity will be priced lower, while smaller projects will be at the higher end of the range.
