Golf Simulator Turf

Turf for the simulator bay: the putting surface, the hitting mat and how the two fit together.

Golf simulator turf is the floor of the bay: a base panel system that lifts the surface, a putting turf on top, and a hitting mat let in flush so you hit and putt from one level. It is for home simulator rooms, college golf programs and commercial bays that want real cups, chipping and breaking putts rather than plain landing turf and a mat to stand on. We have been building simulator floors since 2010.

Why upgrade from landing turf

Putting turf wall to wall, cups, and a hitting strip let in flush

A typical home simulator has simple landing turf, so the ball does not click around the room, and a hitting mat you stand on. That works for hitting balls, gameplay and shot feedback. People come to us to go further:

  • Putt to real holes instead of aiming at targets
  • Add chipping to the room
  • Inset the hitting mat flush with the putting surface
  • Add undulation for breaking putts
  • Add a fringe border
  • Raise the floor on a base system so a small hitting strip replaces the big mat and opens putting lanes

We never put foam under simulator turf. A molded base panel replaces it.

The three base systems compared

The base sets the total height, and the total height decides which hitting mat sits flush and which cup the ball will drop into.

D-Base O-Base Elite Base
Panel 0.75 in 1 in 2 in
Footprint 10 × 10 in 24 × 24 in 23 × 23 in
Locking Vertical Vertical Both ways
Load 175 PSI 150 PSI Vehicles
With turf 1 to 1.25 in 1.5 in 2.5 in
Cups Shallow Shallow Regulation
Per sq ft $11 to $14 $21 to $26 $29 to $34

Prices are for the full system, plus freight, and move with the turf you choose and the size. On Elite Base, larger and simpler projects sit at the low end of the range and smaller ones at the high end.

D-Base, the low profile system

D-Base is a molded interlocking panel that lifts the turf 0.75 in off the floor, a large step up from the foam many simulator installers use. Panels drop in vertically, and a molded click-on transition edge and corner piece make the install simple. Putting turf on top brings the total to 1 to 1.25 in, and the hitting mat is matched to that height.

We can set low-profile cups 0.875 in deep in a D-Base green, but a golf ball is 1.68 in, so there is little room for a cup. So D-Base is a low-cost floor, not the choice when putting matters most.

Popular D-Base sizes:

  • The D-Base 10 × 12 Sim Green
  • 9 ft 3 in wide × 13 ft 3 in deep with an 8 × 4 ft inset hitting mat
  • The width of your room × 14 ft 2 in deep

The hitting mat is usually 4 × 8 ft, and we can inset a hitting strip instead. For a modern look, pair D-Base with Pro Putt Tour Black putting turf and a 50/50 hitting mat (half black fibers, half green).

O-Base, room for a premium mat

An O-Base simulator floor with cups, a chipping collar and a fringe border

O-Base works like D-Base but is 1 in thick with a 2 × 2 ft footprint, so there are fewer pieces to lay and more height for the mat. Panels lock vertically to their neighbors, so they drop straight in. We usually pair it with 0.40 or 0.50 in putting turf for a total of 1.5 in.

O-Base is the thinnest system we suggest for a premium hitting mat such as Real Feel Country Club Elite (CCE) or an EZ Tee Custom mat. With 0.50 in nylon putting turf, the mat sits flush with the green. It is thick enough for low-profile cups that hold the ball, which is why commercial bays and indoor training centers choose it.

Popular residential O-Base sizes:

  • 13 ft wide × 12 ft 6 in deep, 6 in fringe border, 8 × 4 ft inset hitting mat
  • 11 ft wide × 14 ft 6 in deep, 6 in fringe border, inset hitting strip
  • The width of your room × 14 ft 6 in deep

Elite Base, the 2 in system

Elite Base is the 2 in interlocking panel, one of the products Pro Putt Systems was built on and the panel under every standard model green and our Standard Sim Green. Each full panel weighs 8 lb, comes in six shapes, and is strong enough to drive a truck over. With premium nylon putting turf, the system stands 2.5 in before undulation.

  • The ball drops into regulation-diameter cups
  • Panel and turf absorb energy together, so chips check and bump-and-runs run out as they would outside
  • The panels follow the undulation we fabricate underneath, for smooth, realistic breaks
  • Even the thickest premium mat insets flush; any mat under 2.5 in is backed or shimmed to height
  • Cables for floor-mount launch monitors and swing cameras run in channels under the panels, out of sight

Mats that suit Elite Base include EZ Tee Custom, Real Feel CCE and the EZ Tee 50/50 black and green. We have used Elite Base in teaching facilities, college golf programs and high-end home simulator rooms.

Popular Elite Base sizes:

  • 9 ft 7 in × 13 ft 5 in with a bump rail border
  • 15 × 20 ft with a fabricated fringe border
  • The width of your room × 16 ft deep

We install custom and standard sizes, or recreate your room in our build shop, cut the green to fit and freight it to you to install yourself.

Edge finishes

D-Base

  • Putting turf draped over the edge and held with double-sided tape
  • Fringe draped over the edge, stapled or taped
  • Putting turf or fringe wrapped around the edge and stapled
  • Fringe fastened to the floor with a reducer strip, popular in commercial bays

O-Base

  • Putting turf draped over a transition we fabricate; best when the green runs wall to wall and only the back edge needs a transition
  • 6 in fringe border taped over a fabricated transition
  • Putting turf wrapped and stapled to the side of the panel
  • Custom fringe with an adhesive reducer strip, common in commercial bays

Elite Base

  • Molded bump rail border, the black border on our standard models
  • 10 in transition wedge hidden under fringe
  • The whole 2.5 in system sunk into the floor
